About the workshop leader

Willem Hoyng is a partner in Howrey’s Amsterdam office. He specializes in advising on European patent strategy and in coordinating and conducting European patent litigation. In addition, his practice consists of IP litigation, International litigation in general, Dutch Supreme Court litigation, ECJ litigation and EPO oppositions. Willem has obtained landmark decisions in the Dutch Supreme Court and among others, Vredo/Veenhuis, BAT/Doucal and Van Bentum/Kool. Before the European Court of Justice, he has acted among others as counsel for Windsurfing International, Ballantine's and Philips in the landmark cases Windsurfing International vs. the Commission, Ballantine's vs. Loendersloot and Philips vs. Remington. Willem is patent counsel to all major Dutch multinationals and many major foreign corporations, including major pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Willem is also professor of intellectual property law at the University of Tilburg. Among others, he is member of the government advisory committee on patents, member of the examination committee for patent attorneys and President of Dutch Bar advisory committee on IP matters.

Willem has written Repair and the law of Patents and Dutch Business Law and numerous articles in the field of Intellectual Property. In 2002 he was awarded the Wim Mak award for his article on the use of market surveys in trademark litigation.
